Accra Hearts of Ooak hosted their arch-rivals Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium for the inaugural Democracy Cup on Wednesday evening.
The match, held in honour of 30 years of parliamentary democracy in Ghana, ended with a 2-1 victory for the Porcupine Warriors.
Asante Kotoko took the lead in the 30th minute through a penalty converted by Justice Blay and maintained a 1-0 advantage at halftime.
Hearts of Oak equalized in the second half with a header from new signing Asamoah Boateng Afriyie, although the goal was surrounded by controversy due to an injury to Kotoko’s goalkeeper Frederick Asare.
Nevertheless, Kotoko regained the lead when Peter Amidu capitalized on a defensive mistake by Hearts of Oak, securing the 2-1 win for the Kumasi-based team.
Despite a late surge from Hearts, Asante Kotoko emerged victorious, marking their third win of the 2023/24 season against their rivals.
This victory grants Kotoko the opportunity to face DC United in a friendly match later this year.
