South Africa secured a spot in the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with a hard-fought victory over Cape Verde, as Ronwen Williams played a pivotal role by saving four penalties during a dramatic shootout following a goalless draw after extra time.

In a grueling contest marked by poor finishing, Williams showcased exceptional goalkeeping skills, denying Bebe, Willy Semedo, Laros Duarte, and Bryan Teixeira in the penalty shootout.

His outstanding performance included a spectacular late save that tipped Gilson Benchimol’s strike against the woodwork as extra time loomed.

Cape Verde’s goalkeeper Vozinha also made two exceptional saves in quick succession during extra time, denying Mihlali Mayambela and Teboho Mokoena.

South Africa, now set to face Nigeria in the semi-finals, aims to avenge their defeat to the Super Eagles in 2000 when they were beaten 2-0. Despite a 24-place gap in FIFA’s rankings, the 1996 champions are determined to make their mark in the upcoming clash scheduled in Bouake on Wednesday at 17:00 GMT.
