The clash between Senegal and Gambia took place at Stade de Yamoussoukro in the first Group C match of the 2023 AFCON tournament. The defending champions wasted no time asserting their dominance as Pape Gueye found the back of the net in the 4th minute after a well-executed assist from team captain Sadio Mane.

While Gambia struggled to respond, their challenges escalated in injury time when Ebou Adams received a red card, reducing them to 10 players. Seizing the numerical advantage, Senegal capitalized in the second half, with young talent Lamine Camara scoring two goals.
