AFCON 2023: Ghana Moves Camp From South Africa To Kumasi After Criticism

After facing backlash on social media, the management and technical team of the Black Stars have decided to change their training location for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Originally planning to camp in South Africa, they have now made a U-turn and will be moving the team to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

This decision comes as a response to public criticisms and concerns about why Ghana would choose a country far from the tournament’s venue in Cote d’Ivoire, while other countries are opting to camp in Ghana.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced that the team will begin their training in Kumasi on Tuesday, January 2, 2023, instead of Sunday, December 31, 2023, as originally planned. As a result of this change, the international friendly against Botswana, scheduled for Monday, January 8, 2023, in Johannesburg, has been cancelled.

The GFA is currently working on finding a new opponent for the team as part of their preparations for the tournament in Abidjan. The decision to relocate the training camp was made after a review meeting by the Ghana Football Association on Thursday, December 28, 2023.

The GFA took into consideration the request of the Black Stars Technical Team for a quiet and serene camping atmosphere. Therefore, the hotel where the team will be staying will be strictly off-limits to the public and the media. Additionally, all training sessions will be held behind closed doors and will not be accessible to the public or the media.
