In a stunning turn of events, Côte d’Ivoire managed an extraordinary comeback, securing a 2-1 victory over Mali in extra time despite being reduced to nine men on Saturday evening, earning them a spot in the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The hosts, who previously relied on a penalty shootout to overcome Senegal in the first-round knockout match, faced a resilient Mali side that had defeated Burkina Faso 2-1.

The first half witnessed chaotic moments, with Sikou Niakate’s handball penalty appeal dismissed due to an offside call, and Odilon Kossouna conceding a penalty for a foul on Lassine Sinayoko, only for Adama Traore to miss the crucial opportunity.

Just before halftime, Sinayoko drew another foul from Kossouno, resulting in a red card for the Ivory Coast player. Despite playing with a numerical disadvantage, Nene managed to find space and unleashed a spectacular strike from 30 yards, giving his team the lead. However, Simon Adingra’s injury-time goal leveled the score just before the end of regulation time.

With no decisive outcome in extra time, the match appeared headed for a penalty shootout. Yet, in added time of extra time, Oumar Diakite delivered a knockout blow, securing the victory for Côte d’Ivoire.

This resilient nine-man performance propels Côte d’Ivoire into the semi-finals of the AFCON 2023, showcasing their determination and skill on the football stage.
