Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has shared his thoughts on the state of Ghanaian football under Kurt Okraku’s administration.
From poor performances at international tournaments to administrative missteps, here are the major highlights of Nyantakyi’s critique:
Decline in the Black Stars’ Performance
Nyantakyi lamented the Black Stars’ consecutive group-stage exits at major tournaments, including the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). For the first time in the team’s history, they exited back-to-back AFCON tournaments without winning a single game.
Failure to Qualify for the 2025 AFCON
The Black Stars’ recent failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON marks a historic low. Ghana finished at the bottom of Group F with just three points, ending a two-decade streak of consistent AFCON appearances.
Disappointing 2022 World Cup Performance
At the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Black Stars managed only one win before being eliminated in the group stage. This was another missed opportunity to shine on the global stage.
Frequent Coaching Changes
Nyantakyi highlighted the instability caused by the GFA’s decision to appoint five coaches in five years under Okraku’s leadership. According to him, this lack of consistency has contributed to the team’s underwhelming performances.
Lack of Progress in Football Development
According to Nyantakyi, the GFA under Kurt Okraku has failed to raise the standard of football in Ghana. He described the situation as concerning, likening it to a “troubled pregnancy,” where the problems are evident for all to see.
Calls for a Better Future
While criticizing the current administration, Nyantakyi emphasized the need for improvement in Ghanaian football. He expressed hope that the Black Stars can turn their fortunes around when they face Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
