2023 Women’s World Cup: ‘Brave’ Nigeria Stun Host Nation Australia With 3-2 Victory

Nigeria is on the brink of a Round of 16 appearance after coming to the party in their second Group B game against the host nation, Australia in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Falcons came from a goal down to defeat Australia 3-2 in a Group B Women’s World Cup game played at Brisbane Stadium on Thursday.

The Falcons had to punch above their weight as their opponents were inspired by the knowledge that a victory would guarantee them a spot in the Round of 16 with one game remaining.

Chiamaka Nnadozie, the goalkeeper, made a series of outstanding saves to keep her team in the game in the first half. But in the opening minute of extra time, Emily van Egmond successfully converted Caitlin Foord’s cut-back, defeating the custodian.

The teams had reached parity after five minutes. Uchenna Kanu easily slid the ball into the goal after Rasheedat Ajibade’s cross was deflected into her path. The West Africans remained resolute in defence while the Matildas made the better start to the second half of the two teams.

Osinachi Ohale scored a goal to make it 2-1 in the 65th minute after Nigeria unexpectedly won a corner. Despite MacKenzie Arnold’s initial save, the ball was not cleared, and it dropped nicely to Ohale.

The third goal for the Super Falcons was then scored by Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala, who took advantage of sloppy communication between the goalie and the defender in the back.

Nigeria is now on top of Group B with four points, ahead of Canada on goal difference, with Australia on three and Ireland out of contention without any points at the bottom of the standings.

Next Monday, Australia and Canada square off in Melbourne in the group’s other game, while Nigeria plays Ireland in their final match in Brisbane, requiring only a draw to advance.
