Will Smith is no stranger to surprises, but his latest project has fans buzzing for all the right reasons.
The Hollywood icon has teamed up with Detroit rap heavyweight Big Sean to unveil “Beautiful Scars,” a collaborative single that’s already shaping up to be as thought-provoking as it is creative.
Over the weekend, Smith dropped a teaser for the project, which pays homage to one of cinema’s most iconic moments: the red pill vs. blue pill scene from The Matrix (1999).
While many fans initially speculated this meant a new Matrix movie starring Smith was in the works, the truth turned out to be even more exciting—a musical collaboration blending two cultural powerhouses.
In the clip, Big Sean takes on the role of Morpheus (originally played by Laurence Fishburne), while Smith channels his inner Neo. The duo reenacts the legendary scene, putting their own witty twist on the dialogue.
“Look, you’ve made some awesome career choices your whole life. There’s only one you truly regret. Well, maybe two, but we’re not gonna focus on that one,” Sean quips, a not-so-subtle nod to Smith’s infamous Oscars slap in 2022.
With a knowing smirk, Sean delivers the pivotal line: “So, I’m gonna give you a choice. Blue pill—everything remains the same, and you get to move on with your life. Red pill—you get to go back and star in that movie that got away. The choice is yours.”
This cheeky reimagining isn’t just a nod to The Matrix—it’s a reflection on Smith’s career and public journey, as well as a creative setup for the themes of “Beautiful Scars.” The title suggests a song centered on growth, reflection, and owning one’s imperfections—a fitting message for both artists.
