Hajia Rahmatu Tahwee Sheikh Sharubutu, the wife of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu is dead

Her demise occurred on Wednesday, March 27, with the cause of death still undisclosed. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia extended his sympathies to the Chief Imam and the Muslim community in Ghana.

Dr. Bawumia also offered prayers for her eternal rest.

“I have learnt, with sadness, the passing of our dear grandmother and beloved wife of the National Chief Imam, Hajia Rahmatu Tahwee Sheikh Sharubutu.”

“Hajia Samira Bawumia and I extend our condolences to His Eminence, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, and the entire family.”

“May the Almighty Allah welcome our dear grandmother and grant her Jannatul Firdaus.”

Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu is a prominent Ghanaian Islamic cleric who currently holds the esteemed position of Chief Imam of Ghana and is also a member of the National Peace Council.

His journey in leadership began in 1974, when he was appointed as the Deputy Regional Chief Imam after extensive deliberations involving tribal chiefs, academics, Islamic scholars, and religious figures. During this time, he served as the deputy to his cousin, Imam Muhammed Mukhtar Abbas, who succeeded his father.

Additionally, Sharubutu is the visionary behind the Dr. Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu Education Trust Fund (SONSETFund) and the Islamic Peace and Security Council of Ghana (IPASEC).

Celebrating a remarkable milestone, Sharubutu reached the age of 100 on April 23, 2019. Demonstrating his commitment to public health, he received the COVID-19 vaccine at his residence in Fadama, a suburb of Accra, on March 3, 2021.

In March 2021, Sharubutu commended the chief of Ejura for successfully resolving a dispute between the Imam of Ejura and the Zongo Chief. He encouraged both parties to come together and emphasized the importance of peace within the community.

Recognizing his significant contribution to upholding human rights in Africa, Godfred Dame, in May 2021, acknowledged Sharubutu’s role as a beacon of peace.

Alongside Imoro Tanko, Akpene Ziwu, and others, he urged the Chiefs and people of Akuapem to embrace harmony and reconcile their differences.

On July 16, 2021, Sharubutu led the inaugural Jummah prayer at the Ghana National Mosque, situated in the Kanda suburb of Accra. This historic event marked a significant milestone in the country’s Islamic community.
