Why I’m Supporting Mahama’s Return to Power for the Sake of the Arts- Christiana Awuni

Kumawood actress Christiana Awuni has shared insights into former President John Dramani Mahama’s support for the creative arts industry, revealing how he aided actors and other creatives by helping them acquire cars.

In an interview with Empress Gifty on the show U Cook, Awuni spoke about Mahama’s contributions, her personal experience, and her decision to back his political comeback.

Awuni recounted how, in 2013, President Mahama offered vehicles to various individuals in the creative arts industry, including herself and fellow actor Michael Afranie.

According to her, Mahama covered half of the cost of these vehicles, while the recipients were responsible for paying the remaining 50%.

This gesture earned Mahama great respect from Awuni, who emphasized the fairness and thoughtfulness of his approach, as he didn’t give the cars for free but facilitated access to them.

However, things changed when the New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by President Nana Akufo-Addo, came into power.

Awuni recalled an unsettling incident in which members of the NPP confiscated her car. She explained that while driving, NPP members approached her one day and claimed that the car belonged to the Association of Oil and Gas (ASOG), a group aligned with the party.

Since Awuni was not a member of the NPP, they took the car from her. This moment marked a low point in her experience and highlighted the stark contrast between the two political administrations, in her view.

For Awuni, Mahama’s support for the creative industry extends beyond personal benefits. She believes that his past actions demonstrate a genuine commitment to uplifting artists and creatives in Ghana, something she feels has been lacking under the current administration.

Citing the good works she witnessed during Mahama’s tenure, Awuni declared her support for his campaign, stating that she is not seeking a political position but believes in his vision for the industry.

Awuni also pointed out that other actors, such as Wayoosi, continue to benefit from Mahama’s generosity. She disclosed that Wayoosi receives an allowance from the former president, further underscoring Mahama’s continued interest in the welfare of the creative arts sector, even after leaving office.

As the 2024 elections approach, Awuni’s endorsement of Mahama reflects the growing conversation about the role of the arts and entertainment sector in Ghana’s political landscape.

Many creatives have long voiced concerns about the lack of consistent support from the government, and for Awuni, Mahama represents a leader who has not only listened to these concerns but also taken concrete steps to address them.

In her interview, Awuni made it clear that her loyalty to Mahama stems from his proven track record, rather than any personal gain.

She believes that if he returns to power, the creative arts industry will flourish, receiving the attention and resources it needs to grow and thrive.

With her public declaration, Awuni joins a group of prominent figures in Ghana’s entertainment industry who have openly supported Mahama, sparking discussions about the intersection of politics and the creative arts.
