Ghanaian rapper-turned-singer Lasmid recently opened up about his musical evolution and the reasons behind his transition from rap to singing during an appearance on Akwaaba Show on Accra 100.5 FM.
“Rap sells commercially, but everyone has their unique vibe,” Lasmid began, explaining how music offers him the opportunity to experiment with different genres.
A self-proclaimed curious individual, Lasmid shared how he loves to explore and challenge himself musically.
“I’m someone who is inquisitive and likes to dabble in different things. I don’t like standing at one side,” he said. “If it’s critical, I can even do Hiphop, Reggae, Asorkpor, and everything else. I love learning.”
His desire to learn and expand his musical horizons led him to take a different route. “This is why I switched from rap to singing,” Lasmid admitted. However, his transition wasn’t a sudden, drastic change.
It was rather a natural progression driven by a desire to evolve as an artist. Initially, he started off in the Highlife genre, but after gaining experience, he decided to immerse himself in Afrobeats as well.
“I was doing Highlife with the singing, initially, but I decided to learn how to do Afrobeats in addition. I’m still learning,” he revealed.
Despite having made a conscious decision to leave rap behind, Lasmid still has a special connection with the genre. “I have quit rap but I have also not quit it – as they say an exorcised witch knows how to still scare the children,” he joked.
Even now, he occasionally finds himself recalling some of his rap verses. “I still remember some of my rap verses but I often get stumped at a point when I try to perform them,” he added with a laugh.
