Kenyan musician Mejja Okwonkwo has long been celebrated for his bold lyrics, relatable persona, and unique sense of style.
But behind the baggy clothes and ever-present tumbler lies a philosophy that prioritizes comfort, simplicity, and staying true to oneself.
In a radio interview, Mejja shared insights into his fashion choices, revealing that his preference for loose-fitting clothes stems from a deliberate decision to avoid being flashy. While many celebrities opt for designer outfits and extravagant accessories, Mejja takes a different approach.
“I’m not a flashy person,” the Tabia Za Wakenya hitmaker explained. “I love shoes. Shoes give me confidence. Even though I don’t wear shoes all the time, when I do, a good pair makes me feel great. That’s why I invest a lot in shoes.”

For Mejja, footwear is more than just a fashion statement—it’s a source of self-assurance. His love for shoes also aligns with his practical style, which favours comfort and functionality. “I wear comfortable clothes,” he said.
“My stylist, Babu, sometimes picks outfits for me, but I’ll refuse if they don’t feel right. For me, comfort is everything.”
This grounded approach extends beyond fashion. Mejja’s iconic tumbler, often seen in his photos and public appearances, has become a signature part of his brand. However, it’s also a source of misunderstanding.
“People think I’m always drunk because I’m always holding my tumbler,” he admitted with a laugh. “But that’s not true. It started as a simple habit and eventually became part of who I am. Now, whenever I go somewhere, people ask, ‘Where’s your mug?’ It’s like a trademark now.”
Mejja’s relatable and down-to-earth image resonates deeply with his fans. In a world where public figures are often scrutinized for their choices, Mejja remains unapologetically himself. This authenticity is reflected not just in his fashion but also in his outlook on life.
“I believe in God and justice for all people,” he shared. “But I also believe that your personal beliefs should never interfere with someone else’s life.”
