Ghanaian broadcast journalist Kwami Sefa Kayi, questions the government on what will happen to the E-Levy if they are planning to reintroduce road tolls. 

The host of Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show said, “My question on this road toll is, so right now the ministry of finance has sent a proposal to the road minister, which means it’s leaked information and not something they wanted us to find out about, so what has happened to E-Levy because they said E-Levy will solve everything?”

In a previous post by Tru News Report, on March 15, 2023, the Ministry of Finance issued a press release saying that tolls would be brought back, but this time it wanted to raise the rate. According to a memo, the plan is for all prices to go up by an average of 88.05 percent.

The Finance Ministry wants to change the prices of road tolls. Heavy buses, for example, would have to pay GH2.00. Cars will now pay GH1.00 instead of GH50, motorbikes will pay GH0.50 instead of GH0.10, and Pick-up/4*4 vehicles will pay GH1.50 instead of GH1.00.

After the implementation of E-levy, the road tax was eliminated. The government claims that the e-levy will be used in place of road tolls. This has led many to wonder what will become of the controversial e-levy now that road toll collection is being reinstated. 

The government is also in discussions with “other important stakeholders,” whose “opinion will be taken before the final implementation on the modalities on the road toll,” the statement added.
