We Will Just Die and Go — KK Fosu

Highlife icon KK Fosu has expressed a heartfelt plea for greater inclusivity of legendary Highlife musicians on modern platforms, emphasizing the importance of bridging generational gaps in Ghana’s music landscape.

In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie, the veteran artist tackled the misconception that Highlife music belongs solely to older generations and urged for more opportunities to showcase the genre’s enduring value.

“We’re grown up, so we need to think like grown-ups,” he began, highlighting the need for mutual respect and understanding between older musicians and today’s youth.

“This is their time. We need to mingle with them; let them know that, okay, this is your legend.”

KK Fosu stressed the importance of introducing young audiences to Ghana’s music legends, asserting that ignorance could lead to the erasure of their contributions.

“If you don’t respect KK Fosu, then you’ll be saying bad things about KK and other legendary acts. They wouldn’t know them. We will just die and go, and then they will never know about us,” he lamented.

The Highlife veteran’s words resonate with a larger concern about how traditional Ghanaian music is perceived and preserved.

Highlife, a genre that once dominated the airwaves and defined Ghana’s cultural identity, now competes with Afrobeats and other contemporary genres that appeal to younger audiences.

KK Fosu believes the solution lies in collaboration and mentorship, with seasoned artists engaging with younger musicians to foster appreciation for their legacy. “When you try to introduce us to them, that’s when they’ll get used to us,” he explained.

The artist also called for increased opportunities for Highlife musicians on major platforms, emphasizing the need for balance in representation.

“I’ll be happy if they give more stages to Highlife musicians—legendary musicians. I’ll be so happy with that,” he concluded passionately.
