We Need Mental Health Evaluation for Some Officials- Bridget Otoo Calls Out Gideon Boako

Ace broadcaster Bridget Otoo has sparked a fiery conversation on X after reacting to a statement made by Gideon Boako, the Technical Advisor to Ghana’s Economic Management Team (EMT) and Spokesperson to the Vice President.

Otoo, known for her bold stance on national issues, did not mince words in her response to Boako’s comment, which she viewed as deeply troubling and dismissive.

In a post that left her followers in shock, Bridget Otoo exclaimed: “Herh!!! Tell me this is fake… like he sat down, wrote this, comprehended and pressed sent?

“We really need to do mental health evaluation for some of our people.” Her sharp criticism came after Boako remarked on the country’s environmental concerns, calling out what he perceives as selective outrage over pollution.

Boako had earlier stirred controversy when he commented on the recent public outcry surrounding the pollution of Ghana’s rivers, particularly the Pra and Tano rivers, which have been affected by illegal mining activities.

He argued that the level of concern over these rivers, which are outside Accra, highlights a double standard, as the polluted Odaw River and Korle Lagoon in Accra receive less attention. “Hypocrisy is when we gloss over the polluted Odaw river and Korle lagoon in Accra but demonstrate over a polluted Pra or Tano river outside Accra,” Boako stated.

Bridget Otoo’s response struck a nerve, reflecting the frustration many Ghanaians feel towards public officials who seem out of touch with the country’s environmental crises.

Her criticism implies that such comments are not only dismissive of genuine concerns but also suggest a lack of coherent strategy to tackle the environmental challenges facing Ghana.

The Odaw River and Korle Lagoon have long been symbols of pollution and neglect in the capital city, yet the more recent degradation of the Pra and Tano rivers, largely due to illegal mining (galamsey), has drawn national and international attention due to its scale and urgency.

Boako’s statement, which was meant to highlight perceived hypocrisy, instead invited widespread backlash for appearing to trivialize the very real environmental and health impacts that polluted rivers have on communities across the country.

Bridget Otoo’s strong reaction further underscores the growing frustration among citizens about the lack of effective action from government officials to address the ongoing destruction of the country’s natural resources.

Her suggestion that Boako’s comments warrant a “mental health evaluation” may seem harsh, but it reflects the palpable anger among Ghanaians who feel that environmental issues are being politicized or ignored.

For many, this is not merely a political debate, but a matter of public health, survival, and the preservation of natural resources for future generations.

The broader discussion raised by this exchange touches on an important question: how should Ghana’s leaders prioritize environmental clean-up efforts across the country?

With urban rivers like the Odaw and Korle Lagoon suffering from decades of neglect, and rural rivers like the Pra and Tano being rapidly destroyed by illegal mining, citizens are demanding a unified and comprehensive approach to environmental protection.
