We Must Punish Those Who Disrespect Chiefs – Kweku Darlington Reacts to Afia Pokua-Manhyia ‘Clash’

Rapper Kweku Darlington has shared his thoughts on the growing trend of disrespecting chiefs and elders, particularly on social media.

In an interview with Amansan Krakye on Property FM, Darlington emphasized the need for stricter punishment to curb such behavior, referencing the recent controversy involving media personality Afia Pokua and the Manhyia Palace.

“We don’t have to encourage such acts, and if those doing it had been punished, at least one of them, we would give utmost respect to our elders.

“Even if your dad is bad, he’s still your father,” Darlington stated, stressing the cultural importance of respecting authority figures.

He explained that disrespecting elders and chiefs carries no benefits and can instead bring curses upon those who engage in such behavior.

“There are no benefits attached to denigrating a chief or hurling insults at an elderly person. It’s rather a curse that you’re inviting upon yourself, so why do we do that?” he questioned.

Darlington further suggested a unique form of punishment to serve as a deterrent for anyone who disrespects a chief or elder.

“In my opinion, if someone disrespects a chief, we should invite the person to slaughter about five or four sheep. Everyone will learn a lesson from it and desist from that act,” he proposed.

He expressed concern about how easily people use social media as a platform to insult and disrespect authority figures, adding that if one person had been punished for such behavior, others would likely stop.

“That behaviour has come up on social media, where people just get up and sit behind a phone to insult chiefs and elderly people.

“If at least one person had been punished, most people would put an end to it,” Darlington concluded.

As mentioned, his comment is in response to Afia Pokua’s issue with the Manhyia Palace after she boldly criticized the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for what she perceived as his lack of action in mediating conflicts involving the Ashanti people and other ethnic groups, particularly the Bonos.

During an appearance on Bribi Gye Gye Wo, a show hosted by Mona Gucci on Onua FM, Pokua expressed her frustration, accusing the Ashantis of asserting dominance over other tribes and criticizing the Asantehene for failing to intervene in these tensions.
