We Have Lost Two Lives, How Is This Justice? Victim’s Family Speaks Out

The courtroom was heavy with emotion as family members of two young girls killed in a tragic car crash at East Legon voiced their disappointment following the sentencing of the teenage son of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako.

The 16-year-old found responsible for the accident was given six months in a correctional facility—a ruling that has left the grieving families struggling to reconcile their pain with the court’s decision.

“Six months is not enough,” said the grandmother of Justine Agbenu, one of the victims, her voice trembling as she spoke outside the courthouse.

“We have lost a life—two innocent lives. How is six months justice for what has happened to our family?”

The devastating crash, which claimed the lives of Justine Agbenu and Maame Dwomoh Baah, has been a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless driving.

The 16-year-old was reportedly speeding in a luxury Jaguar F-Pace Sport, leading a convoy of friends, when he collided with a black Acura carrying the two preteens.

The tragedy sparked public outcry, with many questioning the adequacy of the country’s legal provisions for juvenile offenders involved in fatal incidents.

“The laws of this country need to change,” Justine’s grandmother continued, her tone firm with resolve. “These punishments don’t match the pain we are going through. They must be amended so that others will take responsibility for their actions.”

While the families expressed mixed feelings about the court’s ruling, their frustration was clear. Another family member, visibly shaken, added: “What can I say, what am I supposed to say, what am I to say? The court has given its judgment. But I pray that one day the laws will be changed.”

For them, the issue is larger than just this one case. “You can’t kill two people through reckless driving and get away with this.

This is my issue,” the grieving grandmother lamented, echoing a sentiment shared by many Ghanaians following the sentencing.
