Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 Presidential election, has spoken about his decision to concede early in the election.

In a recent address to members of the diplomatic corps at his office in the Jubilee House, Accra, Dr Bawumia explained that the move was made with the nation’s peace and security in mind.

Dr. Bawumia shared with the diplomats that, “On the dawn after the election, the NPP, through our internal collation mechanism, became aware that we had lost.”

He continued, “We realized that waiting for the Electoral Commission (EC) to go through the process of collating and releasing the results would only fuel unnecessary tension.”

The vice president stressed that his decision to concede swiftly was guided by the need to avoid creating an environment of uncertainty and unrest.

“By waiting for days as the EC put together the results, we could have risked escalating tensions, which could have ultimately caused unnecessary violence and disturbances,” Dr. Bawumia stated, explaining the importance of timely action to prevent potential chaos.

Dr. Bawumia’s reflections were not only focused on the immediate political environment but also on the broader implications of any unrest. He expressed deep concern for the economic recovery of Ghana, emphasizing that the nation was slowly recovering from previous challenges.

“I was deeply worried about the economic impact any disturbances could have, especially as the country is slowly recovering from numerous challenges,” he remarked. “Violence or unrest could have set us back, and we couldn’t afford to let that happen.”

He also spoke about the regional security concerns that could arise in the event of instability in Ghana. “Beyond the domestic impact, I was also concerned about the security implications for the entire sub-region,” Dr. Bawumia explained.

“Terrorists could take advantage of any instability in our country, spreading anarchy and further destabilizing the region.”
