Celestine Donkor has opened up about her humble beginnings during the “In the Grass to Grace” edition of the “Just Being Us” show, produced by MzGee.
Her reflections on childhood bring to light the challenges faced by large families and the incredible resilience of her parents, particularly her mother.
Recalling her childhood, the popular gospel musician shared, “It was not easy for parents like mine to take care of 15 siblings. I remember how we all had to eat from one pot.
There is a particular pot my mom cooked in. At a point, we all agreed it was a miracle pot because when she had 7 kids, the pot was full and enough for everyone. We were 15, and the same pot was full and was enough for everyone, so we called it a miracle pot.”
Her fond memories of the miracle pot symbolize the love and resourcefulness of her mother, who worked tirelessly to ensure her children never went hungry.
Celestine emphasized her mother’s determination, saying, “My mom did everything to make sure we were fed, like selling everything. I do not know what my mom hasn’t sold in this life.”
Celestine’s story is a powerful testament to the sacrifices parents make for their children. Growing up in a compound house in Flat Top, Abeka, she experienced life in a communal setting, where twelve different families lived together.
“I remember very well, it was a chamber and hall, so I grew up sleeping on a couch. I thought the couch was actually the bed. It was strange for me, later in life, to have my own bed,” she reminisced, highlighting how her upbringing shaped her understanding of comfort and home.
