We Are Still Worried – Minority Speaks on Akwatia MP Court Ruling

The Minority in Parliament has expressed deep concerns over the Koforidua High Court’s ruling against the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, stating that legal steps have been taken to challenge the decision.

At a press conference on Thursday, February 20, 2025, the Minority confirmed that they had filed a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal and an application for a stay of execution pending appeal at the High Court in Koforidua to halt the ruling’s implementation.

“Legal steps have been taken, a notice of appeal has been filed against the ruling of the High Court at the Court of Appeal, and an application for a stay of execution pending appeal has also been filed at the High Court in Koforidua,” a Minority representative stated.

However, the Minority questioned the urgency with which Justice Senyo Amedehe was proceeding with the case despite multiple pending legal processes at the Supreme Court.

“What is the interest of the Judge in the matter before him that all these applications have been filed at the Supreme Court, including a certiorari, including a stay of execution and including an application for him to recuse himself, but evidence abounds that Justice Senyo Amedehe decided to proceed with alacrity?”

The controversy stems from an election petition filed on December 31, 2024, which has led to legal battles challenging the jurisdiction of the court.

With a contempt hearing scheduled for February 26, 2025, the Minority argues that the judge should have waited before making further rulings.

“We, the Minority, are still worried. At worst, there is a pending application seeking to ask the jurisdiction of the court, including the very contempt application before him on his docket, which is yet to be moved on February 26, 2025,” the statement added.
