On Thursday, January 30, what was expected to be a routine vetting session in Ghana’s Parliament turned into an unexpected scene of chaos, with tensions running high between Minority Members of Parliament (MPs).

Bernard Ahiafor, Chairman of Parliament’s Appointments Committee, recently gave his account of the situation, shedding light on the heated events that unfolded during that day’s proceedings.

Ahiafor recounted a moment of confusion and rising hostility, revealing that the Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin, had given instructions to his fellow MPs that contributed to the unrest.

“I heard the Minority Leader asking that some people be called into the vetting room, and soon after, I saw people walking in,” Ahiafor said. His tone was one of surprise as he described the tension in the room as it began to escalate.

One particular moment stood out in his mind: “On that day, the Minority Leader was very harsh to the second Deputy Whip, Jerry Shaib. I’m not going to repeat the words used against him,” Ahiafor shared, indicating that the exchange was notably intense.

“While the details of the words used remain unspecified, the sharpness of the disagreement marked the start of a heated atmosphere that would soon engulf the room.

As tensions mounted, the situation took an unexpected turn. “I couldn’t fully understand their intentions,” Ahiafor continued, explaining his confusion as the room began to spiral into chaos.

The tension reached its peak when someone in the room spoke in Twi, a local Ghanaian language, which further contributed to the unraveling of the situation. “Before I knew it, someone spoke in Twi, and they started pulling cables. Chaos ensued, and the entire room became hostile,” Ahiafor said.

The sudden eruption of disorder left Ahiafor in a state of disbelief. “I was left astonished by what unfolded, just sitting there and watching them,” he added, emphasizing his role as an observer in a situation he did not fully understand at the time.
