Water Tariffs To Go Up From June 1

The cost of water services will see an upward adjustment for all consumer groups starting from June 1.

This comes after the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) reviewed and approved an increase in water rates for the second quarter of 2023.

The same time frame saw a general 18.36% increase in PURC’s electricity and natural gas pricing. As reported by citinewsroom.com, PURC stated that the decision was made to balance the prevention of prolonged power outages and their detrimental effects on jobs and lives while limiting the impact of rate hikes on consumers.

The Quarterly Tariff Review Mechanism aims to monitor and take into account changes to important variables that are used to calculate natural gas and electricity pricing.

“In taking this decision, the commission took cognizance of the cost of electricity, increased volume cost of chemicals for raw water treatment, the Ghana Cedi/US Dollar exchange rate and inflation,” PURC announced in a statement issued on Thursday, May 18.

“The Commission will continue to monitor the operations of the utility service providers to ensure value for money and quality service delivery,” it added.
