A few years ago, Achimota School was taken to court by Tyrone and Oheneba, who are Rastafarian boys, for refusing to admit them because of their dreadlocks, which is an important practice in their Rastafari religion.
On Monday, May 31, 2021, the Accra High Court made its ruling on the case, ordering Achimota School to admit the students.
The presiding judge, Justice Gifty Adjei Addo, disagreed with the arguments put forward by the Attorney General and granted all the requested reliefs to the students, except for compensation in the case of Tyrone Marhguy.
Justice Addo found it absurd for the Attorney General to suggest that the two boys were not students in the first place. As a result, Achimota School was directed to admit both Rastafarian students. Oheneba had already been enrolled in the school on Thursday, June 3, after completing the admissions process with his parents.
