As Ghana approaches a pivotal election period, broadcast journalist Afia Pokua, widely known as Vim Lady, has made a heartfelt appeal for calm regarding rising ethnic tensions in the country.

Her remarks come in the wake of recent controversies surrounding Agoo TV’s Afia Pokua and her relationship with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II.

In a public statement, Afia Pokua acknowledged the growing unease and division stemming from ethnic discussions that have gained traction in recent years.

“The argument about ethnicity has been very common in recent years. From the videos online, it’s clear that Afia Pokua is remorseful,” she remarked, urging both the public and traditional leaders to foster an atmosphere of forgiveness and understanding.

She emphasized, “Ethnic issues are highly controversial, and we have all been guilty of speaking against different ethnic groups.

“So, from the chiefs to everyone, I advise that we calm down and forgive her.” Her appeal comes as many Ghanaians are reflecting on their responsibilities to promote unity in a time when political tensions are at a high.

The controversy surrounding Afia Pokua began when she boldly criticized the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for what she perceived as his lack of action in mediating conflicts involving the Ashanti people and other ethnic groups, particularly the Bonos.

During an appearance on Bribi Gye Gye Wo, a show hosted by Mona Gucci on Onua FM, Pokua expressed her frustration, accusing the Ashantis of asserting dominance over other tribes and criticizing the Asantehene for failing to intervene in these tensions.

Her comments immediately sparked outrage within the Ashanti community, where many interpreted her words as an attack on their revered traditional leader.

In the wake of her remarks, several influential figures from the Ashanti Kingdom, including sub-chiefs and queen mothers, have spoken out, condemning Pokua’s statements.

They have stood firmly in defence of the Asantehene, highlighting his role as a unifying figure and refuting the notion that he has neglected his responsibilities in handling inter-tribal disputes.
