Trudeau Strikes Back: Canada Imposes 25% Tariffs on US Goods in Retaliation

In a bold response to US tariffs on Canadian goods, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that his government will impose counter-tariffs on billions of dollars worth of imports from the United States.

These new tariffs will amount to 25% on selected US goods, making a clear statement about Canada’s stance in the ongoing trade dispute with its southern neighbour.

This action comes as a direct retaliation to US President Donald Trump’s controversial decision to implement tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium, which he unveiled in the spring of 2018.

Trump’s tariffs, which he claims are necessary for national security reasons, have sparked significant backlash not only from Canada but also from other trading partners around the world.

In addition to the measures taken against Canada, President Trump has also signed an order to impose a 10% tariff on imports from China, deepening the trade tensions between the two economic giants.

The new tariffs from the US, including the 25% levies on Canadian goods, are set to take effect on Tuesday, marking a new chapter in the escalating trade war between the US, Canada, and other international markets.

The Canadian government’s move is seen as a direct countermeasure, sending a message to the Trump administration that Canada will defend its economic interests.

In a statement, Prime Minister Trudeau emphasized that Canada had no choice but to stand up against what he described as “unjust tariffs” and ensure that Canadian industries are not unfairly impacted by protectionist policies from the US.

While this tariff battle continues to unfold, experts warn that the impact of such actions could extend beyond trade and into other economic areas, affecting everything from manufacturing to consumer prices in both nations.
