Ghanaian actor Agya Koo recently shared intriguing insights into the competitive dynamics between the Ghanaian and Nigerian film industries during his prime.

Speaking on Lawson Radio, Agya Koo, who was once at the pinnacle of Ghanaian cinema, revealed how his rising popularity in Ghana became a concern for Nigerian filmmakers, leading to alleged plans to sideline him and protect their market influence in Ghana.

“It got to a point where the Nigerian movie industry wasn’t making much progress here in Ghana,” Agya Koo explained. “They even held a meeting in Lagos to figure out who the ‘Agya Koo’ guy was, and someone from there called me to warn me.”

The beloved actor’s sudden rise in popularity with Ghanaian audiences was noticeable; Agya Koo’s distinct comedic style and relatability quickly turned him into a household name. However, according to him, this popularity came with its challenges.

He recalled a warning from Nigerian actor Mr. Ibu, who reached out to caution him against coming to Nigeria.

“One day, he [Mr. Ibu] called to warn me not to venture into Nigeria. So when they offered me money to act, I avoided it,” Agya Koo added, noting how he chose to prioritize his safety amidst the rising tension.

Agya Koo also discussed strange health challenges he faced at the height of his career, which he connected to the stress and potential sabotages he encountered. “I started having issues with my eyes.

“I went for several eye tests, but they all came back normal,” he shared. This concern deepened after receiving calls from close friends in the industry, like actress Mercy Asiedu and film producer Miracle Films, who reported having dreams of him undergoing eye surgery. Both advised him to be cautious.

In response, Agya Koo asked directors to reduce his night shoots, hoping it would ease the strain on his eyes. “I asked the directors to reduce the night shoots, but they were hesitant. That’s why people thought I was refusing some roles,” he clarified, countering past assumptions that he was deliberately rejecting work.
