Ghana’s political climate has shifted dramatically following the 2024 general elections, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing a decisive victory over the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC, Joseph Ade Coker, has attributed this landslide win to widespread public frustration and the leadership of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, whom he believes embodied the hope for change that many Ghanaians were desperately seeking.
“What you saw was the anger of the people. Ghanaians were really angry,” Ade Coker said passionately during an interview.
“So, people voted massively for the NDC because they wanted a change and believed in what President Mahama was promising.”
The lead-up to the election was marked by mounting public dissatisfaction with the NPP government.

The rising cost of living, escalating unemployment, and a perceived disconnect between the leadership and the ordinary citizen set the stage for a political overhaul.
For many Ghanaians, the challenges of daily survival became unbearable, and Ade Coker believes this discontent fueled the massive turnout at the polls.
In the months preceding the election, Mahama’s campaign focused on addressing these very issues, presenting a vision that appealed to a population desperate for solutions.
His message centred on economic recovery, accountability, and restoring dignity to governance. To many, Mahama’s leadership represented a chance to rebuild trust between the government and its citizens.
