Apathy Caused Our Defeat – NPP General Secretary

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has described the party’s performance in the 2024 parliamentary elections as unexpected and deeply disappointing.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen program, he didn’t hide his disbelief over the results, saying, “We are still in disbelief; the election outcome has left us stunned.”

Kodua highlighted that the party had worked tirelessly to avoid internal disputes and ensure a smooth primary process leading up to the general elections.

According to him, the 2023/2024 parliamentary primaries were among the most transparent in the party’s history.

“We made a commitment to ensure such incidents did not recur in the 2023/2024 primaries. I believe you can attest that we conducted one of the most transparent and efficient parliamentary primaries in our party’s history, free of any controversy.

Constituencies were given the full opportunity to elect their preferred candidates to lead them in the 2024 election,” he stated.

Despite these efforts, the outcome exposed an underlying issue of voter apathy within the party. Kodua acknowledged that this lack of enthusiasm had a significant effect on the NPP’s fortunes at the polls.

“The level of apathy that permeated the party during the 2024 elections had a significant impact on both the presidential and parliamentary candidates,” he admitted, stressing the need to address this going forward.

In response to the shocking results, the NPP has tasked a committee chaired by Prof. Mike Oquaye to investigate the situation thoroughly.

Kodua reassured the party faithful, saying, “The committee, chaired by Prof. Mike Oquaye, will conduct a thorough investigation to uncover what truly transpired.”
