The Ghanaian delegation at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games showcased their cultural heritage by donning traditional Ghanaian smocks (fugu) during the opening ceremony at the River Seine on Friday, July 26.
As reported by Graphic, Team Ghana’s Media attache, Benjamin Willie Graham, highlighted that the team’s choice of attire aimed to celebrate and promote the rich diversity of Ghanaian culture at the international event.
“We are going to wear our traditional fugu and a black down as well as special footwear. Also, five athletes from us will be at the opening ceremony because the opening ceremony will be on the river. So five of them will be there to ensure they hoist the flag of Ghana,” he said.
The Ghanaian Smock, known as Tani, is a significant garment worn by both men and women in Ghana.
It holds a special place as the most popular traditional attire in the country, with the Dagbani term for the fabric being Tani, and the male and female versions referred to as Bin’gmaa and Bin’mangli, respectively.
Notably, the smock holds historical significance as it was worn by Ghana’s founding fathers during the declaration of independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957.
