On Wednesday, Taylor Swift addressed the recent cancellation of three of her Eras Tour performances in Vienna, Austria, which occurred earlier this month due to a thwarted terrorist attack, describing the situation as devastating.
In a statement posted on social media, the 34-year-old TIME Person of the Year said: “The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows.”
The singer expressed her appreciation for the enthusiastic audiences and dedicated artists during the European segment of her Eras Tour, which recently concluded with performances in London.
She also conveyed her gratitude to the authorities who thwarted the Vienna plot, stating, “thanks to their efforts, we mourned concerts rather than lives.”
Swift also explained why she waited to speak out until now: “I decided that all of my energy had to go toward helping to protect the nearly half a million people I had coming to see the shows in London,” she said.
“I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows.
“In cases like this one, ‘silence’ is actually showing restraint, and waiting to express yourself at a time when it’s right to. My priority was finishing our European tour safely, and it is with great relief that I can say we did that.”
Authorities have apprehended three teenagers in connection with a purported plot to attack the concert set to take place from August 8 to 10 at Ernst Happel Stadium.
Investigators revealed that two of the individuals had been radicalized through online channels. A legal representative for one of the primary suspects asserted that the teenager’s alleged intentions were mere “fantasies” that he could not execute.
