Suppliers Of Food For Free SHS Programmes Threatens To Sue Government Over Gh200 Million Debt

, Ghana Street Journal

The National Food Suppliers Association has requested that the government immediately repay outstanding debts owed to its members.

The food distributors are frustrated because the government has been silent about the unpaid arrears owed to their members for two years. If the government does not pay the association’s members the two years of back pay by Friday, June 16, 2023, the association says it will seek legal action.

As part of efforts to have the arrears paid, the food suppliers have announced that they will commence a series of demonstrations at the headquarters of the National Food Buffer Stock Company beginning on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.

It stated that all efforts to get the government to pay the more than GH200 million owed to its members had failed. Association spokesperson Kwaku Amedume told Citi TV that members are no longer swayed by the government’s empty promises.

Since the money owed to the Buffer Stock Company’s investors has depreciated over time, he said, “We will be proceeding to court because the money we are taking from the government is without interest and the money has been with the government for two years.” So if we must go to court, we will be asking for interest on our money because we are spending so much to get this money. We will be asking for damages, compensations, and anything that our lawyers may deem proper.”
