The Strategic Thinkers Network-Africa (STRANEK-Africa) has requested the Office of the Special Prosecutor to conduct an investigation into Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng’s 36-page report on illegal small-scale mining (galamsey).
In a petition sent on May 2, 2023, the Civil Society Organisation (CSO) urged the Special Prosecutor to conduct an investigation into the allegations made in the report in question and bring those responsible to justice in the latest news today.
In his 2021 report, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng accused members of parliament and high-ranking government officials of being involved in galamsey, or unlawful small-scale mining, in Ghana.
Evidence presented in the Galamsey report pointed to the involvement of members of parliament and government officials in the menace, or at least their willingness to use their positions to shield friends and family members who were.
Former Manso Nkwanta MP Joseph Albert Quarm, director of operations Lord Commey, executive assistant Charles Ni Teiko, and director of political affairs at the Office of the Chief of Staff Frank Asiedu Bekoe were all named in the 36-page report written by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng.
Prof. Frimpong Boateng also claimed that Information Minister Koio Oppong Nkrumah was behind a plot to destroy him because of his efforts to fight the threat.
The President’s Office has stated that the report was not an official report delivered to the President’s Office, despite the fact that some government officials who were involved have denied the accusation in the report.
The report was characterised as Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s “personal grievances” in response to problems he encountered as IMCIM chair.
It went on to say that despite Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s grave allegations, no evidence has been provided or presented to allow the allegations to be appropriately investigated, even though he accuses some government appointees of being involved in, supporting, or interrupting the fight against illegal mining. The President’s Office said the charges in the document were based on gossip.
