Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr. was born in Accra, Ghana on October 17, 1984 at the Police Hospital to parents Charles Nii Armah Mensah Sr. and Elsie Evelyn Avemegah. His father is a politician, entrepreneur, and attorney.

Shatta Wale attended Seven Great Princes Academy at Dansoman, a suburb in Accra, where he demonstrated an affinity for arts and acted in a popular drama series, By the Fireside, at the National Theatre of Ghana. He then continued to the Winneba Secondary School where he obtained his second cycle education.

Music Career

He began his youthful musical career under a borrowed name and identity, Doggy, in homage to his favourite DanceHall singer at the time, Yoggy Doggy.

Later he changed his name to Bandana, which catapulted him to popularity after a single hit song. He died in music, was buried for years, and then arose with a new name, Shatta Wale, a new identity, and hit after hit after hit.

In 2019, he also collaborated with Beyoncé on her album The Lion King: The Gift, “Already,” which was nominated for a Grammy Award.

At the International Reggae and World Music Awards in 2021, he was nominated for two awards and won the title for “Best Virtual Entertainer of the Year” (IRAWMA).
He was the first Ghanaian to arrange the Faith Concert, a digital event on YouTube.

During the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was staged to provide hope to Ghanaians and his global audience. The Ghanaian Ministry of Communications selected him and Highlife musician Kuami Eugene as the headlining performers for the COVID-19 app’s virtual debut performance on April 13, 2020.

Awards & Endorsement

On July 8, 2017, Worcester’s mayor, Joseph Petty, awarded Shatta Wale with the city’s key.

On March 18, 2018, Wale was honoured at the 37th Annual Chicago Music Awards (CMA) and the 36th International Reggae & World Music Awards for his contribution to reggae in Ghana (IRAWMA).

Wale was appointed brand ambassador for Guinness Ghana Breweries in 2014. and as the representative of the Rush Energy Drink brand.

In September of 2017, Kasapreko Company, a Ghanaian manufacturer of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, announced Wale as the new brand ambassador for Storm Energy Drink.

Shatta Wale signed a brand ambassador contract with Boss Baker Beef Roll on November 17, 2017. On Wednesday, September 11, 2019, Infinix Ghana, a smartphone manufacturer, announced Shatta Wale as its Brand Ambassador.
