Joy News’ Twitter account has posted unique footage of an Impala vehicle presented to chief of Tumu by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah as a token of appreciation for accompanying him to Egypt to pay the dowry for his wife, Fathia Nkrumah.
Despite its dilapidated state, the car holds significant sentimental and historical value.
Fathia Nkrumah, the wife of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has an interesting backstory. According to a report on Face2FaceAfrica.com, before marrying Fathia, Nkrumah had impregnated a woman named Isis Nashid.
Nashid, an Egyptian working for the colonial government on the Gold Coast, had to leave Nkrumah and return to Egypt after becoming pregnant with his child. In 2015, Souad El Rouby Sinare, a close friend and businessman of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, revealed this saga. Nashid quickly got married in Egypt to avoid the shame of having a child out of wedlock.
After this incident, Sinare convinced Nkrumah to find a wife, preferably Nashid, who had his child and fled to Egypt. Although Nkrumah and Fathia had never met, Fathia Halim Rizk, as she was known then, seemed excited about the idea of marrying Nkrumah.
Despite reports that her family did not agree with the idea of marrying a foreigner, this claim could be dispelled as Fathia’s brother had already married an English woman in the 1950s and left Egypt with her.
Fathia’s excitement about marrying a man she had never met continued as she tried to convince her mother that Nkrumah was similar to President Gamel Nasser, a freedom fighter who served his people. However, her plea fell on deaf ears. Undeterred, Fathia left for Ghana in 1957 to marry Nkrumah.
Despite disapproval from her family, Fathia and Nkrumah tied the knot in 1957, with only one family member, her uncle, present at the ceremony.
