Cuban-American comedian and actor Ángel Salazar, famed for his work in “Scarface,” has died at 68.
His passing was confirmed by his representative and friend, Ann Wingsong, who shared the news with TMZ, stating that he died peacefully in his sleep and was discovered the next morning, August 11th.
Salazar had been dealing with heart issues in recent years, although the exact cause of death has yet to be determined.
Born in 1956, Salazar gained prominence with his role as Chi Chi in the 1983 film “Scarface,” where he portrayed the loyal sidekick to Tony Montana, played by Al Pacino.
He was one of Montana’s two most trusted associates, famously appearing in a scene where they burst into a bathroom to save Montana from an assailant wielding a chainsaw.
Chi Chi meets his end during a gunfight in Montana’s mansion in the latter part of the film.
Following “Scarface,” he appeared in several notable films, including “Punchline” alongside Tom Hanks and “Carlito’s Way,” where he once again collaborated with Pacino.
Salazar continued to act throughout his life, featuring in other well-known films such as “Hot to Trot” and “Maniac Cop 2.”
In addition to his acting career, he was a successful comedian, appearing in various HBO comedy specials, including “Last Comic Standing.”
Salazar’s last performance occurred earlier this month at the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino in Reno, Las Vegas, where he performed from August 1 to August 4.
