Sarkodie is facing backlash from the New Ghana Social Justice Forum, a social justice and human rights group, who have petitioned the French National Olympic and Sports Committee to bar him from performing at the Africa Fan Zone.
The group’s primary concern is Sarkodie’s alleged derogatory remarks about women, which they view as indicative of misogyny.
Citing instances such as his disrespectful references to Yvonne Nelson in the song ‘Try Me’ and Krobo women in the track ‘Jennifer Lomotey’ with Kurl Songx, the group argues that Sarkodie’s history of disrespect towards women disqualifies him from participating in the Africa Fan Zone event scheduled for August 9, 2024, at the Stade Robert Cesar in France.
“Honouring Sarkodie with the stage at Africa Fan Zone raises concerns, particularly for women. Sarkodie’s past actions, such as labelling actress Yvonne Nelson a prostitute who belongs to the streets in response to her memoir ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson,’ are troubling,” 3News quoted the group as saying.
Days ago, the French Embassy officially confirmed that Sarkodie, King Promise, and Darkovibes will represent Ghana at the Africa Fan Zone concert during the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Along with expressing their support for Team Ghana, the embassy also revealed a generous sponsorship of €20,000.
The Africa Fan Zone is anticipated to draw a wide range of attendees, including athletes, fans, and international visitors.
With the mainstream Ghanaian trio headlining the concert, attendees can expect exceptional performances that will leave a lasting impact. The event is set to take place on August 10th.
This statement provided further details on a previous announcement regarding Sarkodie’s scheduled appearance at the 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony, which had been extensively covered by multiple entertainment news sources a few days ago.
