John Amos, the beloved actor known for his groundbreaking roles in Roots and Good Times, has passed away at the age of 84.
According to his publicist, Belinda Foster, the actor died of natural causes on August 21 in Los Angeles.
In a heartfelt statement, his son, Kelly Christopher Amos, expressed the family’s grief and shared his admiration for his father.
“He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold … and he was loved the world over,” Kelly said. “My father loved working as an actor throughout his entire life … he was my dad, my best friend, and my hero.”
Amos’ passing marks the end of a monumental career that left an indelible mark on television and film. Rising to fame in the 1970s, Amos made his television breakthrough as weatherman Gordy Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
However, it was his portrayal of James Evans Sr., the stern yet loving father on Good Times, that cemented his role as a cultural icon and “TV father” for many across America.
One of his most notable achievements came with his performance as the older Kunta Kinte in the 1977 miniseries Roots, a role that earned him an Emmy nomination.
The series, based on Alex Haley’s novel, brought to life the horrors of slavery, and Amos’ portrayal was both powerful and deeply moving.
Reflecting on his role, Amos once told Time magazine, “It was the culmination of all the misconceptions and stereotypical roles that I had lived and seen being offered to me. It was like a reward for having suffered those indignities.”
Amos also starred alongside Eddie Murphy in the popular comedy Coming to America, further showcasing his versatility as an actor.
Despite his vast body of work, his humility and dedication to his craft never wavered. His agent, Julia Buchwald, praised his character, saying, “He was not only a remarkable talent but also a deeply kind and generous soul.”
John Amos’ passing leaves a void in the entertainment industry, but his legacy as a trailblazer and inspiration to generations of actors will live on.
From his Emmy-nominated performance in Roots to his role as a beloved TV dad in Good Times, Amos’ impact on television and film remains timeless.
