Melissa Arnette Elliott, also known as Missy Elliott or Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott, has been named a nominee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Class of 2023, along with 13 others.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame unveiled the nominations for the Class of 2023 on Tuesday morning, with plans to announce the final members in May and have a ceremony in the fall.

The nominations are as follows:

  • Kate Bush
  • Sheryl Crow
  • Missy Elliott
  • Iron Maiden
  • Joy Division/New Order
  • Cyndi Lauper
  • George Michael
  • Willie Nelson
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Soundgarden
  • The Spinners
  • A Tribe Called Quest
  • The White Stripes
  • Warren Zevon

To be considered for a nomination, an individual artist or band must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the nomination year. Seven of the 17 candidates are appearing on the ballot for the first time.

“This remarkable list of Nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honors and celebrates,” said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “These artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps.”

According to a Rock Hall news release, nominee ballots will be sent to a voting body of more than 1,000 artistes, historians, and members of the music industry who will consider each artist’s musical impact and influence, length and depth of career and body of work, and innovation and superiority of style and technique.

After the inductees are announced in May, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place in the fall on a date and at a venue to be announced.

The Rock Hall said that select donors and members will receive exclusive opportunities for tickets to the induction ceremony. Learn more here.

Missy Elliott is a legendary American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. She began her music career in the early-mid 1990s with R&B female combo Sista, and then joined the Swing Mob collective with childhood friend and lifelong collaborator Timbaland, with whom she collaborated on songs for American R&B artistes Aaliyah, 702, Total, and SWV.

The 51-year-old has been instrumental in bridging the gap between hip hop and R&B, with hits like “Get Ur Freak On,”  “One Minute Man,”  “4 My People,”  “Gossip Folks,”  and “Work It.” The latter won her a Grammy Award for Best Female Rap Solo Performance.

Elliott has been referred to as the “Queen of Rap” by media outlets. She has sold over 30 million records in the United States. She is the best-selling female rapper in Nielsen Music history, according to Billboard in 2017.
