During the Speaker’s Breakfast Forum on November 20, 2023, Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin revealed that the official residence for Ghana’s Speakers of Parliament which is located in Cantonments, Accra was sold to a private developer while he was still residing there.

The Lands Commission only became aware of this when the developer attempted to register the property. Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor, the Member of Parliament for the South Dayi constituency in the Volta Region and a Ghanaian took to his Twitter page to reveal this while expressing his astonishment at the unexpected turn of events.

At today’s Speaker’s Breakfast Forum, Speaker Bagbin revealed that, the Speaker’s Residence at Cantonments in Accra, was sold to a private Developer whilst he was in that residence. The Lands Commission discovered this only when the Developer went to register it. Unbelievable!!

Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei, a Ghanaian lawyer and former chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, came across the tweet and reacted with three emojis, expressing disappointment. Here’s her post:

About the Speaker’s Breakfast Forum

The purpose of the Speaker’s Breakfast Forum is to consolidate the relationship between Parliament and CSOs and explore new ways of working together for accountable governance.

As the Parliament of Ghana celebrates thirty years of uninterrupted parliamentary democracy under the Fourth Republican Constitution, STAR Ghana Foundation is also celebrating its 5th anniversary. While the survival of parliamentary democracy in Ghana since independence for three decades is unprecedented, STAR Ghana Foundation was also founded at a period where the donor conditions globally were not favorable; thus, being able to move from a single donor to a multi-donor Foundation that is still relevant in the Civil Society space today is a significant milestone worth celebrating.

Parliament has been a strategic partner of STAR Ghana from the Programme to the Foundation. This partnership has led to many successful collaborations on several issues including the development of Parliament’s Corporate Strategic Plan (2020-2024).

This year’s Speaker’s Breakfast Forum under the theme: Thirty Years of Parliamentary Democracy under the Fourth Republic: Reflections on Citizens’ Engagement of and the way Forward, is in commemoration Parliament’s 30th and STAR Ghana Foundation’s 5th anniversaries.

It is a platform for high level reflections on citizens’ engagement by Parliament over the years and strengthening partnerships between Parliament and 3 and CSOs.
