Ghanaian Reggae and Dancehall artist, Ras Kuuku has reacted to Kofi Kinaata’s unexpected win in the Reggae Song of the Year category at the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).
The outcome came as a surprise to many, considering the presence of esteemed artists like Ras Kuuku, Stonebwoy, Samini, and Epixode in the running. However, Kofi Kinaata managed to secure the award with his remarkable track, “Effiekuma Love.”
During an interview on Property FM, Ras Kuuku expressed his belief that Reggae music should not be limited to Rastafarians or individuals exclusively dedicated to the genre. He emphasized that the beauty of Reggae lies in its ability to transcend boundaries and appeal to a diverse audience.
He remarked, “Every rasta must give Kofi Kinaata congratulations for winning the reggae song of the year because he was determined to win it and he did.
“Whoever says that reggae music belongs to rasta’s alone then I don’t know how that person thinks because reggae belongs to everyone and not rasta alone,” he stated.
“Reggae is for all of us and everyone can ride on a reggae beat but for the awards scheme we are talking about a genre and we have particular people who are known for it.
“Right now there are some people that if they don’t do reggae in Ghana they will scrap the reggae dancehall category from the awards scheme if we don’t do it again.
He ultimately added; “It means that those of us doing it are the core people of the reggae dancehall genre but it’s all for the good of it that’s why I spoke about it”.
