Professor Jane Opoku-Agyemang Tackles Akufo-Addo Over Ekumfi Comments

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the 2020 running mate of NDC flagbearer John Mahama, has taken a swipe at President Akufo-Addo for attributing the lack of development in Ekumfi, Central Region, to the constituents’ voting patterns.

In a statement on X, Professor Opoku-Agyemang accused the president of a consistent tendency to shift blame for his failures onto those who did not vote for him.

“But come to think of it, our president has been consistent in blaming his failures and woes on those who he claims do not vote for him,” the former running mate wrote.

President Akufo-Addo’s revelation, made during a meeting with traditional leaders from Ekumfi at the Jubilee House, drew widespread condemnation for linking development initiatives to political affiliations.

The opposition NDC characterized the comments as unpresidential and indicative of the president’s vindictive nature.

In her social media post, the former Education Minister urged Ghanaians to vote against the NPP in the upcoming December polls, emphasizing the need to prioritize local area developments.

Opoku-Agyemang’s post underscored instances where President Akufo-Addo allegedly responded similarly to other regions that did not vote in favor of his party. She highlighted his consistent pattern of blaming perceived non-supporters for his administration’s challenges.

“No one has forgotten his response to Torgbui Adzonu-Gaga Amenya Fiti V, the Paramount Chief from Aflao, about the need to complete one of our e-blocks to pre-empt unnecessary stress. Many remember a similar reaction in a response to the displaced and traumatized people of the flooded areas in the Volta Region.

“He simply repeated same to the usurpers from Ekumfi as described by the family of our late President, who were granted audience on a matter that is clearly none of their business,” she stated.

The NDC figure questioned the paradox of the Ashanti Region, a supposed stronghold for the NPP, expressing grievances about neglect. Opoku-Agyemang pondered whether the president’s neglect was directed at regions with the majority of votes for his party.

“The paradox is very tangible; the people of Ashanti Region constantly complaining of neglect. Does his party not gain majority of their votes from the region? Maybe they don’t vote and in the consistency expressed, are deserving of his neglect. This reaction makes one wonder where the ‘massive votes’ actually come from,” she questioned.

The post concluded by welcoming the votes of all Ghanaians, emphasizing collaboration for national development under the leadership of the NDC’s flag bearer, John Dramani Mahama.
