President John Dramani Mahama has stressed that Ghana’s independence must not be remembered as a series of missed opportunities but as a foundation for sustained progress.
“Every Independence Day anniversary must be an opportunity for us to account for the legacy we are building for the next generation,” Mahama stated. “We are merely custodians of this country and its resources, entrusted to manage them wisely today for the generations of tomorrow.”
Reflecting on Ghana’s economic challenges, Mahama noted that while the discovery of oil and gas was met with great optimism, poor decisions had led to missed opportunities.
“Eighteen years ago, we celebrated the discovery of oil and gas with the hope of economic transformation. However, in recent years, poor choices have stunned our prospects and left us facing serious challenges.”

He called for decisive action rather than empty rhetoric. “Discussions about our independence often highlight our reliance on imports, donor aid, and IMF bailouts.
“This reminder is repeated so often that it risks becoming a cliché. The real test is whether we are willing to take action to break the cycle of dependency.”
Mahama reiterated his commitment to leading Ghana through its economic challenges, stating, “As president, I am committed to providing the bold leadership and clarity of vision needed to navigate the turbulent economic waters we are sailing in.”
He urged Ghanaians to ensure that future generations inherit a country that has lived up to its potential.
“Our story cannot be one of missed opportunities. It must be one of continued efforts to achieve far more than we can boast of now. Posterity will not accept our failures or take them kindly.”
