Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has claimed on his Facebook page that the police nationwide have been instructed to refrain from stopping certain trucks with foreign number plates, particularly those coming from the Tema port, to inspect their documentation.
A circular that has circulated widely on social media informs the police force that there are customs checkpoints designated to carry out these inspections.
The circular specifies four routes where police officers have been instructed not to stop trucks: Tema to Accra, Kumasi to Paga, Tema to Accra, Wa to Hamile, Accra to Takoradi to Elubo, and Aflao to Accra to Elubo.
Sharing details of his discovery, the top NDC man said:
Strange orders of this nature from the police hierarchy, particularly, in an election year do not help in easing tensions and building confidence.
What are these foreign truck drivers transporting? Police extortion and harassment of any kind, targeted at whoever, whether locals or foreigners must be condemned, stopped and punished. Why the blatant discrimination?
Local truck drivers also deserve protection from the Ghana Police Service against extortion and harassment. Something doesn’t add up.
Check out the comments his post garnered:
Emmanuel Antwi Agyemang: Though this may sound as treat to security, I think the directive is for only police officers not to stop them. However, I think customs and GIS can equally check these vehicles to be sure of our security.
Rass Ntorhwe Emmanuel Antwi Agyemang : o frm tema harbour to the nxt customs check point about soo many kilometres, they shld be left to do whatever they want to do on our roads when none of their taxes was used for our roads. Come to tema frm valco roundabout to tema motorway old tollbooth nd u will see how they have parked on the shoulders of the road, easing themselves around, cooking ataya nd other stuffs just by the road side
Kofi Asamoah-Siaw: What specific foreign number plates are they talking about? Doesn’t the police know that criminals will take advantage of this directive, mount foreign plates on their trucks to evade police in the transportation of contraband goods? What kind of blanket exemption from police scrutiny is this?
