In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pharrell Williams shared his thoughts on politics and activism, making it clear that he prefers action over speeches.
“I’m more of a humanitarian. I like when people help each other. I’m not sure I’ll ever vote far right, (laughs), but honestly, I don’t really do politics,” Pharrell admitted.
While he respects activists and believes in their cause, he doesn’t see himself as one. “I’m not an activist, but I believe in action. I think activists are important, and you need everyone working together.”
Pharrell also didn’t shy away from criticizing celebrities who push political opinions. “I get annoyed sometimes when celebrities try to tell people who to vote for,” he said.
“Some I respect, but not all of them. I’m one of those people who says, ‘What the heck? Shut up. Nobody asked you.’ When they get self-righteous, roll up their sleeves, and wave around a protest sign, I just think, ‘Shut up!’”
Despite staying out of the political spotlight, Pharrell emphasized that he still cares about his community and his country. “I’d rather stay out of the way, but I will vote how I want to vote. I care about my people, and I care about the country. There’s a lot of work to do, and I’m all about action.”
Although he may not currently engage in political matters, the artist known for “Happy” has previously used his influence to support politicians and address political concerns.
In 2014, he urged then-President Barack Obama to visit Ferguson, Missouri, following the tragic death of Michael Brown.
