Gospel musician Isaiah Kwadwo Ampong, popularly known as Great Ampong, has shared his strong disapproval of a recent anti-galamsey (illegal mining) demonstration, accusing the protesters of ulterior motives.
In an interview on Mother TV, Ampong questioned the timing and intent behind the protest, which occurred just two months before the general elections.

“Why did they wait until two months before the elections to demonstrate? Why now? It suggests they have been paid,” he said, expressing skepticism about the sincerity of the demonstrators.
Ampong went on to criticize the location of the protest, which took place at the 37 Military Hospital area in Accra, far from any illegal mining sites.
“If they were truly concerned, they should have gone to the galamsey sites,” he argued. “You want to demonstrate against galamsey, but you’re doing it at 37? It’s a pointless demonstration.”
He suggested that the protesters were not acting out of genuine concern for the environment or illegal mining but were instead trying to undermine the government ahead of the upcoming elections.
“People are turning democracy into gyimicracy,” he said, using a term that implies foolishness in decision-making. “Someone prompted them to go on this demonstration to make the government unpopular.”

Great Ampong, who has often shared his thoughts on national issues, believes that such demonstrations, especially when poorly timed and planned, do little to address the real problems at hand.
Instead, he sees them as distractions aimed at gaining political advantage rather than genuine efforts to tackle illegal mining.
