The Hajj is a sacred Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the holiest city for Muslims. It is a religious obligation for all physically and financially capable adult Muslims to undertake at least once in their lifetime.
The pilgrimage to the Kaaba, known as the “House of Allah,” in Mecca is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which also include Shahadah, salat, zakat, and sawm. During the Hajj, Muslim brotherhood is emphasized, showcasing solidarity with fellow Muslims and submission to God (Allah).
The word “Hajj” signifies a journey to cleanse the soul of worldly sins, symbolizing both an outward physical journey and an inward spiritual intention.
The pilgrimage rituals take place over five to six days, from the 8th to the 12th or 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar.
