Our Relationship Was Not a Come-We-Stay Arrangement- YY Comedian

Kenyan content creator YY Comedian has recently spoken out to clarify the nature of his relationship with his former partner, Marya Okoth, following rumours about the status of their union.

Despite living together and raising a child, YY emphasized that they were not legally married, although their relationship had all the qualities of a committed marriage.

In an interview with Milele FM’s Ankali Ray, YY sought to dispel any misconceptions about his past relationship, asserting that while they didn’t formalize their union with legal documents, they treated each other as husband and wife throughout their time together.

“Let me put that straight and maintain some respect,” he said, refuting the idea that their relationship was simply a casual “come-we-stay” arrangement.

“In as much as we didn’t get married legally, it’s just the documents that we didn’t have. We treated each other as husband and wife. Papers are just a formality,” he explained.

YY’s comments were aimed at countering the rumours circulating about the nature of their relationship. Many speculated that their breakup was the result of a lack of commitment, but YY was quick to defend the bond they had, insisting that their relationship was built on love, respect, and dedication.

“I don’t want people going around disrespecting what Marya and I had by saying it was a come-we-stay marriage. No, it was not,” he added, firmly dismissing any suggestion that their relationship was less meaningful because it lacked legal recognition.

The couple, who had been together for several years, were blessed with a daughter, who is now three years old.

Their relationship appeared strong, with both YY and Marya frequently sharing moments of their family life on social media. However, in a surprising turn of events, the two announced their breakup, citing “unavoidable circumstances” as the reason for their separation.

In a joint statement, they expressed gratitude for the support they received during their time together but also requested privacy moving forward. “Thank you for your love and support through our union.

We expect individual privacy from each one of you,” the statement read. The breakup shocked many of their fans, who had followed their journey as a couple and a family.

In Kenya, “come-we-stay” arrangements are often used to describe couples who live together without formalizing their relationship, but YY made it clear that this label did not apply to them. While legal documentation may not have been part of their union, their relationship was, by his account, no less significant than that of a married couple.
