Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Backs Bank Of Ghana’s Decision To Build New Head Office Amid Economic Crisis

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has defended the BoG’s plan to construct a new headquarters.

It is his hope that the new BoG edifice will also function as the ECOWAS Central Bank once the new currency is completely adopted.

On Thursday, August 10, the Suame MP said in an interview with Angel FM that when this is accomplished, it will stimulate economic growth in Ghana.

“For a long time, ECOWAS wants to use a common currency, which is the ECO. The West African countries are considering two countries that can serve as Headquarters to the ECO, a bank to be responsible for that, and they will place that under the central bank of that country.”

“So far, there are three countries Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana being considered to host it, but Ghana has a greater chance.”

This comes after the NDC claimed in a news conference that the Bank of Ghana is spending $250 million on a new headquarters. Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson claimed that the Bank of Ghana’s leadership had been badly mismanaging the bank for years, affecting the standard of living for Ghanaians.

As a result, the party has threatened to organise a march on the BoG offices in order to force the removal of the governor and his deputies from their positions if they refuse to resign within 21 days.

However, the central bank’s leadership has explained why it spent $250 million on a new headquarters facility in Accra. “The outcome of the structural integrity work was that the main building does not satisfy the full complement of excess strength required for a building to be considered safe for usage.

“This means that in the case of a worst-case gravity and wind loading scenario, for example, unusually strong wind, the building may be significantly affected.”
