The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed that the new Bank of Ghana headquarters was initially estimated at US$82 million.
The NDC MP proved his claim with documents that revealed how the first steps towards acquiring a new head office were taken.
After hearing the Central Bank’s management defend their decision to spend $250 million on a new building in Accra, Ablakwa decided to weigh in on the discussion.
The central bank released a statement on August 9, 2023, saying that a structural integrity evaluation had shown that the current Head Office building was no longer “fit for purpose” and would be unsafe during big earthquakes.
The Bank of Ghana claims that the new BoG Head Office building is earthquake-proof, unlike the current office structure that was constructed by the Nkrumah Government in the early 1960s.
A member of parliament from North Tongu who has spoken out against the building of the new headquarters has claimed that the Bank of Ghana’s weak defense shows that it has chosen not to be open, honest, and accountable to the people of Ghana.
The MP said in a Facebook post that given the deliberate deception, lack of openness, sponsored obfuscation, and clear dishonesty, he had made the decision to carry out his constitutionally required parliamentary oversight authority to solve the issue in the interest of the entire nation.
He claims to have obtained documentation from the Bank of Ghana that proves the true cost of the new headquarters and cannot be denied or disputed.
