Ofori Amponsah has made a passionate appeal for national introspection in the face of Ghana’s economic challenges.
In a recent interview on TV3, the award-winning artist expressed his deep concern for the direction the country is heading, especially as more Ghanaians attempt dangerous migrations in search of better opportunities abroad.
Drawing on his academic background in economics, Amponsah emphasized the need for Ghanaians to recognize the untapped potential within their own borders, particularly in the agricultural sector.

“What we are facing is external shocks,” Amponsah stated, referring to the economic pressures affecting the country. He added, “I studied economics in school, so I understand the system. What I feel for this nation, especially when I see people on ships heading to Italy, it breaks my heart because there are so many opportunities in this country that people don’t see.”
Amponsah’s concern is rooted in the alarming rise in the number of Ghanaians attempting dangerous sea crossings to Europe, particularly to Italy, in search of a better life. These journeys, often undertaken in overcrowded boats, expose individuals to life-threatening dangers such as drowning, human trafficking, and abuse.
For Amponsah, this trend reflects a tragic misunderstanding of the opportunities available in Ghana, particularly in farming, which he believes holds immense potential for wealth creation and long-term prosperity.
“When it comes to farming, there’s so much opportunity, but people don’t appreciate what will actually bring them money,” Amponsah explained. “Everyone wants to cut corners for quick cash, and when the whole country is focused on shortcuts, what kind of economy can we build?”
Amponsah didn’t limit his critique to individual attitudes. He stressed that a solution to Ghana’s economic woes requires a collective national effort. “We need to do an introspection as a country,” he urged. “One political party cannot fix this alone. We have to come together to solve these issues.”
In his remarks, Amponsah also touched on the underappreciated potential of the agricultural sector. Ghana, blessed with fertile land and a favourable climate, has long been regarded as an agricultural powerhouse in the making.
Yet, many Ghanaians, particularly the youth, view farming as an unattractive and low-status occupation, preferring jobs in urban areas or even abroad. For Amponsah, this is a misguided perception. He believes that with the right investments in farming technology and infrastructure, agriculture could become a significant source of income and job creation for Ghanaians.

“If people loved what would truly bring them money, they would see that farming is a great opportunity,” he emphasized.
However, Amponsah acknowledged that changing attitudes toward agriculture will require a shift in mindset and the realization that quick fixes are not the path to sustainable economic success.
